And it doesn’t matter what you’re wanting to sew, learning to sewing straight lines is the foundation of making absolutely anything with your sewing machine.

Best Tips + Tricks for Sewing Straight

1. Don’t Watch the Needle!

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is staring at the needle while sewing. It moves too fast for your eyes to track properly, and before you know it, your seam is wobbling all over the place! Instead, focus on a fixed point, like the seam guide on your needle plate or the edge of your presser foot.

2. Don’t Fight the Feed Dogs

The feed dogs (those little metal teeth under your fabric) are there to pull the fabric through evenly. If you push or pull the fabric while sewing, you’ll end up with wavy seams or uneven stitches. Let the feed dogs do their job, and just gently guide the fabric.

3. Support Your Fabric

If your fabric is hanging off the edge of your table, gravity can pull it off course, causing uneven stitches. Make sure your fabric is fully supported—either by keeping it on a large, flat surface or by holding it up gently as you sew.

4. Take Your Time!

Speed isn’t the goal—accuracy is! Sewing slowly gives you more control and allows you to adjust as needed. If your machine has a speed control, turn it down to a comfortable pace.

5. Practice, Practice, Practice

Sewing straight lines takes practice, just like any other skill. Try stitching along printed lines on paper (without thread) to develop muscle memory. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel!
